Micromax is an Indian consumer electronics company located in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It is in the business of manufacturing of Mobile Telephones, Tablet Computers, 3G Datacards and LED Televisions. It has 23 offices in India and an international office in Hong Kong.[3][4] The company has about 656 employees. Micromax started as an IT software company in the year 2000[5] working on embedded platforms. In 2008,[6] it entered mobile handset business and by 2010[7]
it became one of the largest Indian domestic mobile handsets company
operating in low cost feature phone segments. This transformation was
steered by four friends who divided responsibilities on functional
lines, which haven’t changed since: Rajesh Agarwal, Rahul Sharma, Vikas
Jain, and Sumeet Arora. The company has a 22% market share in the
smartphone segment in India. As per IDC [8] for Q2 2013. The company's product portfolio has more than 60 models ranging from feature rich, dual SIM phones, 3G Android Smartphones, TabletsPC's, LED Televisions and 3G data cards. The company claims it has many firsts to its credit in the Mobile handset market – including the 30-day battery backup, dual SIM, QWERTY Keypad, Universal Remote Control Mobile Phone
etc. Micromax has presence in more than 560 districts through 125,000
retail outlets in India. The company has sales presence spread across Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and was once present in UAE.
Micromax started its mobile phone manufacturing operations in 2008[9] when multinationals ruled the telecom industry. With an understanding of the rapidly changing consumer preferences[10] coupled with the use of the latest technologies; Micromax differentiated itself from the other players with its pricing[10] Everything started with a truck battery in the year 2007. In the powerless city of Baharampur[11] in the Indian State of West Bengal, Mr. Rahul Sharma saw an AirtelPay Phone being powered by a truck battery. Every night, the PCO owner would lug the battery 12 km to an adjoining village on his cycle, charge it there overnight, and lug it back to Berhampur[11] in the morning. Rahul was fascinated by the nature of innovative adaptation to suit the difficult conditions which the payphone operator had employed and his interest only grew when he found out that to everyone’s surprise, the operator was also able to earn a tidy sum of money. Based on this experience of innovation arising from constraint, Micromax soon launched its first phone with a month long battery back-up known as X1i.[12] In 2011, Micromax entered the phablet market with the Canvas series.[13] Micromax aims to be a company with a double digit market share by 2014.[14] Now the company has entered the smartphone segment and tries to change the status quo that innovation and technology comes at a price.
On 9 October 2012, [32] Micromax announced its foray into the home entertainment segment with the launch of new range of LED Televisions, Home theaters, 3D Blu Ray and SMART Stick,[33] the Android dongle. There are six models of LED TV.[32] from 24” to 55”. All six models feature High Definition Media Interface, which supports all video resolution and are powered by AVEA (Audio Visual Entertainment Architecture).
Micromax entered the world of the tablet industry by launching Micromax Funbook on 3 April 2012 being sold exclusively on Snapdeal.com,[36]an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet with 7-inch capacitive display, 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 Processor with Dual Mali 400 MP GPU, 4 GB flash storage and 512 MB DDR1 RAM. The tablet is powered by a 2800 mAh Battery with a browsing time of five hours. It also features 0.3 MP front camera, HDMI connectivity and Internet access via Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and a 3G USB dongle and a "Made in India" tag. It is eerily similar to the Chinese tablet Ployer Momo 9, which makes people wonder why has it been provided with a mini USB port instead of Micro USB. The Micromax Funbook comes with a mini HDMI port that allows up to HD 2160p (3840 x 2160) video mirroring to larger displays such as HDTVs, etc. Micronax also added new Canvas LAPTAB[37]to their devices, it features Windows 8 and 4.2 jellybean.
